Today was a longer day of travelling, from Capella to Charters Towers, a distance of 428km. Despite some rough sections of the road we arrived in Charters Towers around 3PM. The last time we travelled in this area, Queensland was experiencing its third year of drought and the land was so parched and the animals looked quite forlorn, trying to find feed. This year it was the exact opposite with water lying around everywhere. All the small creeks and dams were full and the larger rivers were flowing swiftly. The surrounding land was green and lush and the cattle we saw looked very contented. As the Queensland school holidays are finishing this weekend there are many people on the move and despite trying the 3 caravan parks in Charters Towers, we were unable to get a powered site for the night. We settled into our unpowered site next to a lovely young family who had been to Cape York for the holidays and were returning to Brisbane. We decided that not having power and being a Saturday night it was a good excuse to go out for dinner. I booked us in to a historic hotel that had survived over the years since the gold boom days. (It was one of 32 hotels that existed in Charters Towers during its boom times.) We had a delicious dinner and returned to the van for a quiet night.
