We woke to quite a cool morning and as we were not moving far (about 100mt to a powered site) we stayed in bed a bit longer than normal. Luckily a friend of Rob’s had lent him a small gas burner and he was able to make coffee. I meant to say earlier that we have decided not to use the gas hot plates or oven of our caravan stove. Rob had received a notification earlier in the year to say that our oven could have a gas fault and could be recalled. So until it has been investigated, we were told not to use the gas! It really hasn’t been an issue as we’ve used the electric hot plate, our small outdoor BBQ, electric frypan etc. but of course for most of those we need power. Anyway Rob was closely watching the people who were occupying our new spot and as soon as they had gone we moved in. The day was bright and sunny and warming up quickly. I needed to do some washing so we got that organised and out on the lines as soon as possible. Following lunch we drove put to Weir Park on the Burdekin River. It was a beautiful little park and the water coming over the weir was quite spectacular. I had thought about putting the kayak in because it was such a lovely day but we really couldn’t find a suitable spot. We then decided to head up to the tower lookout. The hill overlooks Charters Towers and was the site of many of the gold mines as well as all the associated buildings needed for the processing of gold. The hill is littered with the ruins of these buildings. From here we ended up at the huge pioneer cemetery. This cemetery operated from 1872-1895, when a new cemetery was needed because this one was full! There were 25,000 people living here back in the boom days and now the population is around 11,700.
