Friday 12th August Bivouac Holiday Bush Camp

We continue to zig-zag our way across Queensland. It took us just under 2 hours to travel from Ayr to our next stop, Bivouac Holiday Camp. We had heard that this was a wonderful caravan park and it had been recommended to us by many people.  Arriving around 11am we quickly set up. We have power and water and a beautiful site under the shade of some large trees. I had wanted to kayak on the Burdekin River but in Ayr it was far too close to the coast and therefore salt-water crocodiles were likely to be present. Bivouac Junction is far inland and above the Burdekin Dam so it was a safe spot to kayak. After lunch I headed off. The Burdekin is flowing quite fast here so my kayak today was fun, challenging and interesting. I started off by exploring a nearby creek that runs into the Burdekin. That was easy. Then I decided to head up stream. First I had to encounter some rapids. It was tricky, hard work but once through them I just had to push hard as I kayaked against the flow. Of course once I had had enough of this, I just turned the kayak around and let the flow of the river take me back. The fun part was negotiating the rapids to get back to the starting point. Later in the early evening, our neighbours invited us over to sit around their fire and chat over a drink.
