Rob had a few jobs to do around the van so I decided to see how far I could go down the Burdekin River and if I’d be able to get back! The river is flowing quite fast and yesterday I found that the upper stretch had a few “rapids” which I had managed to negotiate and enjoyed the free ride back. This time I was going with the rapids and would have to kayak against them to get back to camp. Well I probably had the most exciting and scary kayak I have had, since I started kayaking on my own. I was hoping to kayak to the bridge which crosses the Burdekin about 2-3Kms downstream. What I didn’t know was that the trip down, was just a series of small “rapids” and at times I was being pushed from rock to rock and going backwards! After successfully getting close to the bridge I found a quiet spot and decided that I’d had enough and that the trip back would take a lot longer than it had to get there. I was pretty happy that I could kayak against the flow but I had to get out of the kayak in two places because I just couldn’t push against the force of the water. It took me twice as long to get back! Anyway, I certainly managed to get my heart pumping! Rob went off on an excursion on his own to search for firewood for our neighbours. He found a good spot and returned with the timber. Our neighbours were very impressed with his find and then took off and collected some more as they are staying here for a few more days. We spent the rest of the day exploring around the camp, doing odd jobs and relaxing in the shade. We’re enjoying the beautiful weather while we can. More and more people arrived in the park this morning. Many are camping down on the lower level, on the riverbank. It seems that this is a very popular weekend getaway for people who live in Charters Towers. There are many groups and families with young children here enjoying themselves.
