Today we drove into Atherton as Rob was going to play golf and I had decided I would do some walking and exploring around Atherton. Rob dropped me off a little way out of town as it was quite early and I could explore and walk before the shops and galleries opened up. Later in the morning, I enjoyed myself visiting the Crystal Caves for a tour. Considering I’m not really into rocks and crystals unless I’m wearing them, it was an extensive and excellent display. The caves covered over 300 square metres and housed a collection of over 600 specimens. That filled in nearly an hour. I also visited 2 art galleries. One had a very interesting display showcasing the work of 5 artist/photographers. Many of the works looked real but you knew they couldn’t be. They were created by layers of different photos put together to achieve some stunning artworks. When Rob had finished golf we met up at the Barron Valley Hotel for lunch. I had chosen this hotel for a reason. It was described as one for the finest examples of pre-war architecture in the far North of Queensland, unrestored and in fine original working condition. Very art deco, with shiny, green tiles on the walls outside, and amazing timber work, terrazzo, ceilings and cornices, on the inside. We enjoyed our lunch and the atmosphere in the hotel. Returning to the caravan, I went for another beautiful kayak down a very peaceful tributary to the lake. I was lucky enough to see quite a few turtles sunning themselves on the rocks and dead trees, while kayaking. Rob will need to give a report on the golf!
Golf course
was outstanding for a country town location. I was the first to hit off and was
able to play 2 balls for 18 holes. Finding greens was a challenge sometimes as
there were at least 5 sharp dog leg holes where you couldn’t see the pin. I
scored 35pts with one ball and 31 the other. I was happy.
