Monday 25th July Lake Tinaroo, Yungaburra

Waking to only a gentle breeze this morning, it meant today was the day that I should try to tackle the long kayak across Lake Tinaroo and then a longer kayak up the Barron River. I left our caravan park around 9.15am. Rob had agreed to meet me at the Barron River Ski Club (with coffeeJ). He is able to track my activity on google maps and so knew when I was close to our meeting place. It is about a 10minute drive from the caravan park. I made good headway across the lake as I had a tail wind and once I was in the river the going was easy. I enjoyed the varied scenery, including the cows grazing near the water. I met Rob at the ski club and enjoyed my coffee. I was feeling fine so I said that I would just explore the Barron a little more upstream before heading back to the caravan. I didn’t intend to go too far but I keep seeing things to interest me. First it was the old railway bridge crossing the river. From here I could see that there was weed all across the river a little further up and so I thought that would probably be as far as I could go and I would be satisfied that I had kayaked as far as I could. On reaching the weedy section I could hear the sound of rushing water and so I thought I needed to push on and investigate. I kayaked on through the thick water weed and came to the rushing water. The water was rushing over a group of rocks and boulders, like a small waterfall or rapids. It was delightful and I knew I had kayaked as far as I could. The kayak home was easy on the river but I did had to work hard across the lake as I was kayaking into the wind. I arrived back around 1pm. Following lunch, Rob and I visited the platypus viewing area just out of Yungaburra. We couldn’t see any at the main viewing area but then we walked for a while along the creek and to our delight watched several platypuses swimming in the creek and returning to their burrows. From here we drove to Shaylee Strawberries, purchased some strawberries and enjoyed a strawberry gelato ice-cream for afternoon tea. We then went to view another massive fig tree, The Curtain Fig Tree. It was just as beautiful and as impressive as the Cathedral Fig Tree.
