Thursday 18th August Cape Hillsborough

Rob had an early start to the day, heading down to the beach before 6am. I had decided to sleep in. We had been told that wallabies and kangaroos gather on the beach at that time. Once on the beach, Rob discovered why. People from the park would feed the roos at sunrise. It was very controlled and the food was a special mix of what they eat in their natural environment. Anyway after 15min or so he returned to the van and we had breakfast. We then decided to do a challenging walk that needed to be done close to low tide. Heading off around 8.30am we had to do a steep ascent through rainforest to visit some stunning lookouts. The lookouts were mainly of the coast line but at one stop we were able to observe huge turtles, swimming and feeding. From these heights we descended to the rocky beach. Just off the beach there is an island and at low tide you are able to walk over a natural causeway to it. So that was what we did, before returning to the caravan via the beach. After such strenuous exercise we drove to a nearby tea house, set in magnificent gardens for morning tea. We had coffee and scones! The beautiful setting was used quite often on the weekends as a wedding venue. Returning to the van I decided to go for a kayak around the bay. It was such a beautiful, calm day I felt quite safe. I stayed out for over an hour and a half. I was lucky enough to see a few huge turtles feeding but unfortunately they were camera shy and I couldn’t get any photos of them. At dusk we returned to the beach with our chairs and drinks to watch the sunset. We were lucky to have two kangaroos join us. They were on the beach licking the sand for salt and minerals and their antics kept everyone entertained.
